As China (mainland's) richest city, Shanghai owns the largest sea port in the world, and also plays a role as China's economic, finance, industrial and commercial center. Housing a population of over 17 million at present, it was once a small town supported by fishing and weaving before the first Opium War. Late in 1990, the central government started developing the area, and has since became the well-known booming metropolis city. Shanghai located in east China, on the delta where Yangtze river (world's third longest river) pours into the China east sea. It is China's largest seaport, 1100km south to China's Capital Beijing (Peking), 1200km north to Hong Kong, 1800km east to Tokyo, 1100km west to Wuhan (inland China's largest port, also on the bank of Yangtze river), 150km north to another large seaport and seafood consuming city Ningbo, 600km south to Qingdao and 900km south to Dalian, 450km south to Lianyungang. Taiwan is northeast to Hongkong. |
